Welcome to the Rochester Area Interfaith Hospitality
Network!
The
Rochester Interfaith Hospitality Network (RAIHN)
officially opened our doors to our guest families
in April 2004. The mission
of RAIHN is to provide temporary
accommodations, food, and compassionate friendship to those
families in the Rochester area who have been
from their homes.
We
are a network of Host &
Support organizations (interdenominational
faith communities)), who are led by a Rochester-based
non-profit corporation
and Board of Directors.
The Interfaith Hospitality Network provides benefits
to BOTH the guests in the program as well as benefits
to the faith community congregations and volunteers.

To the guests in the program, a
day in the life of RAIHN truly provides shelter
from the storm. To the organizations and their
volunteers, a day in the
life of RAIHN is truly an uplifting and worthwhile
experience.
The
Rochester Interfaith Hospitality Network is one
of many such organizations in the country
that provides this much-needed service.

Family
Homlessness is a HOUSING crisis.........
And
it's right here in Monroe County:
- Since
1995 there has been a steady increase of individuals
and families placed in emergency housing ranging from
14% in 1995 to 30% in 2001.
- For
the first time in eight years in 2002 the number of
homeless did not increase. (Monroe County tracks only
those people served, not the number needing housing.)
-
During 2002 (the latest year for which statistics
are available) Monroe County Department of Health
and Human Services provided emergency housing to 8553
families and individuals. There were 3660 children
in the families placed during 2002.
Nationally:
• On any given night, an estimated 700,000 people
are homeless. Over the course of a year, 3-4 million
people experience homelessness. (National Coalition
for the Homeless, Feb. 1999)
• Families are the fastest growing segment of
the homeless population, representing about 40 percent
of all homeless people. One out of every four homeless
persons is a child. (National Coalition for the Homeless,
February, 1999)
• According to a report of the mayors of 27 major
cities, requests for emergency shelter by families increased
22% between 2000 and 2001. (US Conference of Mayors,
Hunger and Homelessness Report 2001)
